FAQ

Is difficult to assemble the rack itself?
Oden and Tor: It is composed of many parts. But if you work calmly and check that every shelf is assembled properly before you build on to the next it is usually not a problem. Installation instructions are only in Swedish at present, however.

Mimer: Can be a little trickier to get together metal and wooden shelf. There are plans to simplify.

Can an assembled rack be sent to me?
Only to some destinations.
Where can I find assembly instructions?
Installation instructions are attached at time of delivery, and are also available on our password-protected CUSTOMER ZONE.
Under what conditions does a Harmoni rack work well?
The Harmoni racks are developed for use on a stable floor with minimum flexing. With a floor that flexes it often doesn’t work well with a turntable on the shelf. In this case we recommend wall mounting the turntable with a Quadraspire or similar wall shelf.
How can the Harmonihyllan be optimized both for an LP12 and a DS?
It is not exactly optimized for a particular device - but rather an "electro-mechanical device that plays music" Even a DS consists of mechanical components – such as the internal crystal oscillator in the clock chip. But all of the components consist of different (micro) mechanical parts which, when subjected to vibration, influence the music. A turntable or a CD player, however, is more sensitive than a DS, and in practice, LP12, Lingo and Akurate CD are substantially improved.

What possibly could be adapted is the damping of the Mimer shelf to be as far from the component’s feet as possible, and the amount of damping needed can be affected by the damping in the feet of the component. Trampolin feet have little attenuation for example. The Harmoni rack system is not optimized for a turntable combined with a springy floor, in most other situations it works perfectly.

Is there a Harmoni wall shelf?
Probably not. It would likely be unduly expensive due to small quantities. The closest that is in development is a Mimer isolation platform. It could be placed on an existing wall shelf, or on an ordinary piece of furniture.
Isn´t it better to have a separate table for the record player?
Possibly, but not necessarily. Harmoni shelves are optimized for best performance on the fourth shelf. The lower shelves have a certain disturbance-absorbing function, and the bottom shelf is clearly the worst.
How much better is Mimer?
You should listen for yourself!
How does a mixture of Mimer and Oden affect the sound?
This has not been fully investigated. The top Mimer shelf in a 1 + 3 shelf is almost as good as the top of a complete Mimer shelf. The Mimer shelf contributes to greater torsional rigidity of the shelf, which is a small advantage. We have not noticed any effect on Oden shelf quality when combined with a Mimer.

"1 + 3" is very popular – and cost effective! Put the most important part of Your Hi Fi system on a Mimer shelf, and the rest of the equipment on Tor or Oden.

Is there a difference in sound between the woods?
This has not been fully investigated but all development has been done with the birch. Birch was chosen initially because of high stiffness to weight ratio. Furthermore, it is a type of wood we do not have to get on the other side of the globe.

After some testing we have decided to consider the birch as our reference shelf. For this reason we introduce also a black and white birch as alternatives to the normal and the "white vaxed" birch (this is not as "white" as the new alternative.).

(Good results also with cherry and ash. The humidity changes the damping in the wood, and this makes it harder to judge type of wood. One could be better with dry air, another at higher humidity...)

Why does it consist of over 100 parts?
This was not planned! Parts have just been added over time to improve performance. But if there is doubt about function, we choose to remove the part, so the goal is not to have an unnecessary part on the shelf!
Should the spikes contact the floor?
If the floor is made of hardwood, it sounds better to let the spike feet contact the floor. But Linn skeets or similar work well with only a slight reduction in musical quality. (A possible future product could be our own floor savers.)
Why does the Oden rack flex?
The flex was optimized by listening to reduce vibration in the shelves. The Mimer shelf is more stable due to the aluminum frame of the shelf.
How often should you tighten the shelves?
The first time the day after assembly, then at a week, 1 month, 6 months and then 1 time per year.
The shelf is not completely flat!?
We are aware of this, and it depends on the random interaction of the various shelves and wooden panels. You may need to put some electrical tape or a small shim on one foot on a component for it to make optimal contact. Also, the component itself is not always completely flat!
Finish blemishes?
The Harmoni rack system is composed of anodized aluminum and solid hardwoods. Minor flaws in the raw material are sometimes visible and, for practical purposes, unavoidable. You can choose to turn shelves in different ways and for instance put the nicest spacers on the front. As a handmade product we are unable to assure flawless appearance without a substantial increase in the price of the units.
